Exchange visit between AWA of AIRBUS DEFENSE & SPACE in Lomé

OADCPH (African Organization for the Development of Centers for People with Disabilities) hosted a delegation of AWA (ALM With Africa) from Airbus Defense & Space from September 29 to October 2, 2014 in Lomé. This delegation was made up of Mr. Christian Desagulier (AWA project manager) and Mr. Ghislain de la Sayette (Africa Director).

The purpose of this visit was to share with the players in rehabilitation the additive manufacturing processes (scanning, digital design, manufacturing by 3D printing) used by Airbus and which can be used in the manufacture of quality prostheses and orthotics, in one step record and at reduced costs.

The discussion meeting organized on 09/30 by OADCPH on this occasion brought together 37 representatives of the main national and international rehabilitation players working in the field of disability in Togo (see list of participants). After presenting the company, the 3D printing system, Airbus presented the teleprosthesis, as well as the sockets obtained by 3D printing.

This meeting was followed by individual interviews with, in particular, the CNAO (National Center for Orthopedic Apparatus in Lomé, the FSH (ICRC Special Fund for People with Disabilities), ENAM (National School of Medical Auxiliaries of Lomé), Handicap International, WHO, WoeLab, FETAPH (Togolese Federation of Disabled People’s Associations), APROSA (Action for the Promotion of Health)

On 1/10, the delegation paid a visit to Kpalimé in the APROSA clinic, an orthopedic fitting center located 150 km from Lomé.

At the end of this visit, it was agreed the following between OADCPH and AWA:

A sub-regional workshop on additive manufacturing It will be organized by OADCPH and will take place at ENAM in Lomé in March 2015 in Lomé. This workshop will bring together around thirty diverse actors (computer engineers, orthopedic technicians) from different countries in French-speaking Africa. Duration of the Workshop:

5 days.

Product:

  • apparatus for two lower limb amputees.
  • OADCPH will calculate an approximate budget for the workshop
  • The CAD training module will be delivered in parallel to ENAM students
  • A MOU will be written by Christian Desagulier

The Airbus contribution will be in kind:

  • project manager and technician Christian Desagulier,
  • a technical trainer specializing in CAD,
  • the machine (3D printer) will be provided by Airbus.
